Prolonged Boko Haram attacks on Cameroon’s Far North Region continue to displace Christians. Some have fled to safer nearby communities. Others, like the community of Njengui, have created a new settlement far from everything they know. These resilient believers refuse to have their faith affected by persecution.
In November 2023, Boko Haram attacked the village of Njengui, throwing the inhabitants into a panic. The entire community fled including around 100 Christians of the local evangelical church. These believers have resettled in Cameroon’s North Region, a desert land, and renamed it Njengui after their former village.
In April 2024, Pastor Jean Paul opened a branch of the Union des Eglises Evangeliques au Cameroon Church in New Njengui. Every month he travels to the community to serve communion to the believers and encourage their faith. On other days, the church is led by Robert, an educator dedicated to teaching them God’s Word.
“We do not have a church building, and even inside, we sit on wood. We do service under a shed,” Robert explains. “Since the Lord said, ‘Even if you are in the bush, do not forget Me,’ we are obliged. When you work for God, you’re obliged to work anywhere.”
Displaced, Not Discouraged
Despite the daily challenges of living far from home—struggling for daily meals, lack of access to potable water, and basic amenities—the inhabitants of New Njengui have constructed a makeshift building which serves as their church. The rainy season is a constant challenge but for these believers, there’s no giving up.
Robert shares, “We want you to help us. We want you to pray for us, that we’ll continue holding our services and that people will come in their numbers because the church is for us.”
Pastor Jean Paul adds, “I ask all the Christians of the world…to support us in prayers and with your advice. We believe that by the grace of God, everything will be fine.”
Local Open Doors’ partners plan to support these displaced believers with a more permanent church structure built in agreement with the church leadership.
